Fashionista Strikes Again

Claire:  "Mommy?  Have you ever described me by saying "She lives for fashion"?"

Me:  "Um . . . I'm not sure I've used those exact words."

Claire:  "Huh.  Don't you think you should?"

In Which the Fashion Police Weigh In

We were out to dinner with our friend and his 15-year old daughter, when the topic of double-pierced ears came up.

Jane:  "Double-pierced ears are so cool.  But you have to be 13 to get them."
Me:  "I agree - double-pierced ears can be really pretty. I've thought about getting a second ear-piercing myself."
Jane [with horror]:  "Mom!  NO!! You can't do that. You cannot get double-pierced ears."
Me:  "Why not? I like them."

Jane [increasingly distraught]:  "MOM! No. That's a terrible idea!!"
Me: "What?! I don't think it's a terrible idea."
Jane:  "Mom. PLEASE. You are all business-womanish. You are not the sort of person who has double-pierced ears."
Me: [silence]
Jane:  "Mom, I'm not kidding.  It's a bad idea. It would be really inappropriate."

Three days later . . .
I'm giving Jane her cuddle at bedtime, when suddenly she blurts out, "Mom, I really do not want you to get your ears double-pierced."  I express surprise that this topic is still on her mind, and she says, "I'm really worried about it.  I've been thinking about it a lot.  Mom, please don't do it - it would be so awful."

So, I guess that's that.

Know Thy Sister

Jane's first comment upon receiving her newest accessory:  "Wow.  Margot is going to be really jealous of this pink cast."

Margot's first comment upon seeing Jane after we got home from the hospital:  "Jane, congratulations!  That's a really cool pink cast."

Does that kid know her sister or what?

(Jane's second comment after getting the cast, by the way, was to announce to the doctor that "this pink cast will still match my red birthday dress."  Even in the throes of broken-arm pain, one must not lose sight of one's fashion priorities.)

Rest In Peace

Yesterday we found a very tiny baby bird that had fallen out of its nest and died. Margot buried it, made a tombstone, and conducted a funeral (at which she delivered the main eulogy). Claire, in typical fashion, weighed in with a real-time critique of Margot's wishes for the dead bird's spirit.

After Margot finished, everyone else had to place a handful of dirt on the grave and then say a few words. (My comments, along with those of the girls' Nana and Papa, were dismissed as "too short and too modern.")  Jane went last and offered the following:  "Dear little bird, I hope you will be very happy in your new home . . . underground."

Transcription, in case you can't totally hear the background speakers:  After Margot offers her hope that the bird will be joined by its mother, father, brothers, and sisters, Claire says, "Margot! You're praying for it's whole family to die!!" Jane, with her usual, practical approach, observes, "It doesn't even have a head."

These Boots . . .

I have had a number of request to post a picture of Margot's infamous pink boots.  Here they are, in all of their patent leather glory (or, more accurately, here is ONE of them).  Does this boot not simply ooze fashion?
